A Doncaster Business is Taking Off in Style at the Airport:
A Doncaster business is on the road to success thanks to the delivery of three new trucks.

Anglo European, a transport and airfreight business, based at Robin Hood Airport is celebrating the arrival of its new branded vehicles thanks to increased trade.

Gary Winterman, Managing Director of Anglo European and Doncaster Chamber’s Entrepreneur of the Year, said: “This is a very exciting time for us. Being based at Doncaster Sheffield Airport means that we are ideally located to offer our cargo handling service and increased business has meant that we’ve invested in our transport system by buying three new delivery trucks.

“We’ve transported some weird and wonderful things during our time at the airport including pies and Doug the Dog – named the world’s ugliest dog in the press. Doncaster Sheffield is one of only six airports in the country to enable animals to jet off with their owners by giving them their own passport through the Anglo European scheme.
“We are working closely with the team at the airport as our aim is to become the carrier of choice in Doncaster for air freight.”

Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) is the UK's newest purpose built international airport, having commenced operation in April 2005 on the site of the former RAF Finningley air base. The Airport is located 7 miles from Doncaster and 25 miles from Sheffield, serving passengers across Yorkshire, the Humber and the North Midlands.

Steve Gill, Airport Director for Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: “We are delighted that Anglo European are expanding their business. Gary is a huge advocate of the airport and works closely with the team here.

“The new trucks look fantastic and they proudly display the Robin Hood Airport logo which will be seen on the roads up and down the country.

Peel Airports calls on Government to rethink its aviation policy:

FODSA Charity Cheque Presentation. Throughout the year FODSA members have been busy raising money for the charity Help for Heroes, and more recently BLESMA. Various fund raising functions were undertaken and back in September of this year FODSA members along with friends and family, Airport Fire and Rescue members and airport staff pulled a 32 ton firetender 500yds. A grand total of £3,320.40 was raised and a Cheque Presentation took place Sunday 6th November at Directions - The National Aviation Academy - Hanger 3 Robin Hood Airport. Ben Parkinson - the most severely injured soldier to come back from Afghanistan - attended to receive the two cheques which were presented in front of the Vulcan XH558 with the airports fire tenders placed astride.

There was also a presentation to Tony Lonsdale - Airport Fire Chief - and White Watch for their much appreciated help and assistance throughout the fire tender pull.

Thanks and appreciation were also expressed to Bev and Lisa at Directions, and Taff from the Vulcan team for giving up their Sunday morning to be there for us.

Doncaster Airport Bosses are Berlin Bound.
Bosses from Doncaster Sheffield Airport are heading to Berlin to meet delegates from across the globe at the 17th World Routes event next month (October 3rd).
The conference is an annual global gathering of the world’s top airlines and airports, dedicated to discussing and planning new services.

Nick Smillie from Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: “This has been a challenging year or two for the industry. This event provides a fantastic forum to make the case for new air services, and to find out about new market developments and up-and-coming destinations.
“Routes provides an ideal platform to encourage airlines from around the world to introduce new services to Doncaster Sheffield Airport. We will be focusing our attentions on building business connectivity and providing a wider choice of leisure destinations for our passengers.”

The airport's "wish list" includes a range of European city destinations, and a ‘hub feeder’ service to provide the airport with global connectivity.
“We have well established relationships with our existing operators and will continue to work with them to develop their offering for the people of Yorkshire and the North Midlands,” added Nick.

Brew for the Few Event - Salute to the Vulcan 15th September: FODSA members were on hand to lend their assistance when 500 guests arrived in Hangar 3 to enjoy an afternoon tea and buffet with XH558. The RAFA - Royal Air Forces Association - Doncaster branch held their annual event down at Robin Hood Airport which was followed by a SunSet Service to Remember The Few.

         In this elegant banqueting setting XH558 took centre stage, where guests enjoyed a most memorable afternoon.
.
During the afternoon Rossington Male Voice Choir gave a fine performance, Vulcan memorabillia was available to browse and purchase, and the guests were able to meet and chat with the Vulcan crew. An experience for some and a most enjoyable afternoon for all.

                  A delicious and well decorated cake to mark the occasion.

Wroclaw: Poland’s hidden gem.
Since joining the European Union in 2004, Poland has seen its tourism numbers increase significantly as holiday’s makers from across the globe head to popular cities including Warsaw, Krakow and Poznan, but there are still a few hidden gems left to be unearthed...

Welcome Home for Vulcan XH558:
An official ‘Welcome Home’ event was held on Wednesday 25th May to mark the occasion of the return of Vulcan XH558 to Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield.
At this event, Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST), the organisation behind the world’s only flying Vulcan, unveiled its vision for the new long term home for this magnificent aircraft in the Directions Finningley CIC hangar at the Airport, including how the public will soon be able to visit the aircraft close up, and how this unique venue will be available for high quality corporate events. In addition, senior representatives from Doncaster Council, Peel Airports and Directions Finningley CIC highlighted the importance of the Vulcan to the area and to the Airport.
A number of local dignitaries, key stakeholders and supporters attended the event. FODSA were asked for their assistance on the day and duly obliged.

"To the Furthest Reaches of the Skies" and back; and she’s staying.
The Vulcan XH558 flew into Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield today, 29th March, where she once flew from during her RAF operational service days, when the airport was then known as RAF Finningley.

The Avro Vulcan XH558, painted in ‘anti-flash’ white, was delivered on 1st July 1960 from the factory at Woodford, near Manchester, to RAF Waddington near Lincoln. XH558 was the first Vulcan B.MK2 to be delivered to the RAF, and she is now the oldest complete Vulcan in the world.

XH558 was also the last Vulcan to leave RAF service, flying on from 1986 to 1993 as the single RAF Display Vulcan, a career of 33 years. Her final flight was on 23rd March 1993 to Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire, having been sold off by the Ministry of Defence to C Walton Ltd, a family firm who purchased and maintained her, with the thought that one day, she might be returned to fight. In 1997, a small team headed by Dr Robert Pleming started to put together an audacious plan to return her to flight, but it was clear from the start that the project would be technically challenging & enormously expensive. It is now anticipated that she will finish her flying days here at Robin Hood Airport, and when these are over, hopefully not for some time yet, we may see a museum where we can all admire her at rest.

Operation ‘Slingshot’, code name for the bi-annual emergency exercise carried out by Robin Hood Airport which involves all the emergency services, was put into practice yesterday, 3rd March, during a bitterly cold windy day.
                  
It is a requirement under CAA Licensing that every airfield conducts a realistic full-scale exercise to test the aerodrome emergency
plan and Airport Multi Agency Plan at intervals not exceeding two years. The purpose of a full-scale exercise is to ensure the adequacy of the
airport emergency plan to cope with different types of aircraft emergency. Those invited to take part in the exercise must include all externally based emergency and support unit services that are likely to be involved in dealing with an aircraft incident and whose responsibilities are defined in the Multi Agency Emergency Plan. 
                 
Aerodromes licensed for aircraft movements during the hours of darkness are required to conduct alternate exercises during such conditions.
Having already tested the Emergency Services ‘blue light’ response to an Aircraft Accident on the airfield and the Passengers Reception Centre
(PRC) in the Terminal on previous occasions, Exercise Slingshot has been designed to test the learning outcomes from previous exercises, in
particular the response and interactions of internal and external emergency services and support units in dealing with an aircraft incident
along with the triage, administration and reparation of passengers arriving at the PRC. 
                
FODSA were asked for assistance and members took on the role of Friends and Relatives of passengers during the repatriation of those that had been involved in the incident.

At this years exercise FODSA were also available to assist with the catering and refreshment side of things. This was made all the more helpful by ‘Greencore Food to Go’ a company who are based in Worksop, for generously donating 200 boxed assortment of top quality sandwiches. This was very much appreciated by all, especially by those poor students who had volunteered to be casualties lying out on the apron concrete in that bitterly cold wind.

Landings at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield are set to be weather proofed thanks to an investment of almost £1m. New equipment will mean that aircraft can land in the region, even in extremely poor weather conditions.
                                                                                     
The CAT III Instrument Landing System (ILS) allows aircraft to make approaches to the runway in deteriorating visibility and cloud conditions thanks to glide path and central line information being fed to the cockpit allowing the pilot to maintain a course for the runway.

Mike Morton, Airport Director for Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield said: “This is a huge investment in the airport and will mean that more flights will be able to land in adverse weather conditions.
“This upgrade continues our commitment to improving our airfield infrastructure and it also means that Doncaster Sheffield Airport will be able to host aircraft that have been diverted from other airports who don’t have this equipment and are suffering from poor weather.

“Our aim is always to provide the best possible service for our customers and by investing in this top of the range equipment we will be increasing the number of flights that can land here whatever the weather and further improving on the reliability of our services.” 

The Instrument Landing System (ILS) is a ground-based instrument approach system that provides precision guidance to an aircraft approaching a runway, using a combination of radio signals and, in many cases, high-intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe landing during instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), such as low cloud ceiling height or reduced visibility due to fog, rain, or blowing snow.

Nationally we are seeing an increase in incidents whereby “laser pens” are being shone deliberately at aircraft, the aim apparently being to temporarily blind pilots. The potential consequences of doing this are, of course, horrific. There have been 2 recent occurrences in South Yorkshire, one involving our force helicopter. Can I request your members be especially vigilant in this regard. Should any such persons be seen, it would greatly assist if details of any vehicles involved are taken. Please report any such activities immediately using the phone number(s) below.
